Reviving a Classic
Discover the remarkable transformation of an original 1957 Abbott St. cottage, where a family’s desire for a central location and a unique living experience led to an inspiring renovation project. This family sought a place where their teenage kids could conveniently walk and bike to school, reducing their daily commute to various activities and work. Instead of opting for a new house with more square footage, they embarked on the challenge of revitalizing this charming cottage.
Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future
The primary objective of this renovation was to creatively convert the modest space into a functional and distinctive home while preserving the original cottage’s nostalgic charm. To achieve this, we embarked on a journey of revitalization. The first notable change was lofting the ceiling and revealing the old fir rafters, which added character and a sense of spaciousness to the interior.
A Nod to Tradition: The Reclaimed Brick Wall
In a tribute to the past, a reclaimed brick wall was introduced, offering a warm and inviting focal point in the living space. This touch of heritage combined seamlessly with the modern amenities and design elements, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.
Radiant Natural Light: Skylights and New Windows
Our quest to infuse the home with vitality and brightness led to the installation of skylights and new windows, transforming the living area into a sun-soaked oasis. The front of the house now bathes in natural light, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
A Space for Teens: Redefining the Back of the Home
The back of the home underwent a significant overhaul to accommodate the needs of the family’s teenagers. Two bedrooms and a new bathroom were ingeniously integrated into this space, providing the perfect haven for young adults. The original bathroom found new life as a compact yet functional ensuite, featuring a repurposed barn door for added character.
Bringing the Outdoors In: Garden Access
Previously closed off from the garden, the rear of the home underwent a transformative change. A magnificent wall of windows was added to establish a seamless connection to the outdoor space. This design element not only enhances the home’s aesthetics but also invites the beauty of nature indoors.
A Modern Retreat: The Backyard Structure
To cater to the family’s evolving needs, a modern 10×20 backyard structure was thoughtfully constructed. This versatile space serves as a home gym and an art studio, offering a serene retreat for both physical fitness and creative endeavors.
In this Abbott St. cottage revival, the fusion of tradition and innovation has yielded a unique and functional home. It’s a testament to the family’s vision and our commitment to preserving the essence of the past while embracing the opportunities of the present. This cottage stands as a beacon of thoughtful renovation, where every corner tells a story of transformation and where cherished memories await their creation.
